    Kids’ radiostation

    Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

    image018.jpg

Some time ago a news about a radio station for dogs appeared blogs around the world. The radiostation was located in Thailand. A similar type of miracle was spotted at Helsinki: an ad about radiostation for kids, Nappularadio (miracle= a new thing )According to the web pages of Nappularadio, they play nice children’s songs and at the evening time you can listen to tales. The radio station was born because of group of parents get tired of all the f* words from Finnish radio stations (refering to Radio Rock, I suppose??) and wanted to have a radio station for their kids, with stories and music suitable for them. It appears that the radio station is quite seasonal, so next time here in Helsinki area you can listen to it when the schools start again.

After spotting this kids’ radiostation I started to think that why this haven’t been here for longer time. Great idea!

Computer game challenges the players to find a medicine for HIV or malaria

    Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Could a group of a computer game players win a Nobel price for finding medicine for HIV or malaria? Possibly in the future if a game called FoldIt manages to gain success and harness the power of smart players all over the wolrd. The game was designed by experts in computer science and biotechnologym, and the purpose of the game is to spur players to solve the mysteries of science all over the world. In FoldIt game the  task is to fold protein to match the best for immune system of human body. Computers can also do this, but the caluclulating capacity needed for right answers might take too many years, so the designers of the game believe more in intution of the gamers. This is an unique example of using crowdsourcing- and making it also fun and exiciting at the same time.

Brain computer interface (BCI) is something that will become more than reality in next 50 years. Actually the first neuroheadset will be lauched soon (late 2008) by Emotiv Systems.

In the future it might be possible that small nanorobots will scan our brains to see our dreams and feelings. Other possibility is small holes drilled to our skull for special BCI devise. This devise could for example record our dreams, and next day we could look at them in our therapy session. Freud would be so exicted about this if he was alive! (check here the whole story)

This vision about capturing dreams was provided by Michael Anissinov from a blog Accelerating Future. Check that blog- it is great!

Combining virtual and reality in gaming

    Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

As a futurist I follow very much blogs to find out new things and emerging issues in life. I do not follow blogs that are mainly focused on personal experiences of life (diary type of blogs), but I do follow blogs that are focused on new gadgets, trends in technology, environment, society etc. Also, there are some blogs that I  follow because the writers of them are just so brilliant, and it is kind of necessity to read them. One of my favourite blogs is www.pinktentacle.com that collects interesting news about Japan- practically in all areas of life. Here is one of my favourite stories:

New Japanese mobile phone game combines virtual gaming and reality. The game — called “Ippon Zuri” (which means “pole-and-line fishing”) — was created by FIT, a Fukuoka-based system development company. The idea of the game is simple: just virtually catch a fish with your mobile phone and if you manage to get one, a real fish is delivered behind your door.  Read more here.
